Our Team
The people you'll actually work with.
Licensed engineers, surveyors, and project managers rooted in Alabama since 2013 — the people who'll walk your site, stamp your plans, and pick up the phone when something needs solving.
How We Hire
Small enough to know your name.
Big enough to deliver.
Every person on this team was hired for the same reason: they care about doing the work right.
We're a growing firm with room to lead, to grow, and to be known by the people you work with. We hire licensed professionals who want real ownership of their projects — not just a name on a stamp — and support staff who take pride in making the whole team look good.

Licensed. Local. Available.

Alan KillenP.E.
Alan leads Civil Southeast into its next chapter. He joined the firm in 2014 and has been integral to its growth, leadership, and client relationships across the Southeast for over a decade.
A licensed Professional Engineer, Alan is known for asking the hard questions early — the kind that save clients money later — and for treating every project like his family will drive by it someday.
When he's not walking a site, he's usually with his wife and kids, at church, or on a football field somewhere in Alabama.
Sarah BennettP.E.
Sarah leads our civil engineering practice — from site design through stormwater and utility coordination. She joined Civil Southeast after nearly a decade at a large regional firm, drawn by the chance to know every project on her desk personally.
She holds professional engineering licenses in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi, and her drawings routinely close permit review with fewer than two comment cycles.
Auburn grad. Coffee snob. Rarely without a red pen.
Marcus JohnsonP.L.S.
Marcus runs the survey side of the firm — boundary, ALTA, topographic, construction layout, and every deed dispute in between. Twenty-two years in the field means he's walked more Alabama property lines than most surveyors will in a career.
Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Alabama and Florida, FAA Part 107 certified for drone survey work, and the person our engineers call when the corner marker doesn't match the deed.
Coaches his son's little league team. Fishes the Gulf when he can get away.
Chase CottonPMP
Chase leads our project management practice. If your PM's phone rings at 6:30 AM because something is going sideways, it's his phone.
Twenty years of managing projects across the Southeast — from $2M church campuses to nine-figure mixed-use developments. PMP certified, and comfortable with everything from a hand-drawn schedule on a napkin to a full-tilt Primavera P6 rollup.
Prefers on-site conversations to email threads. Will drive to Baldwin County to hash something out rather than let it sit in an inbox.
Emily RhodesE.I.T.
Emily handles day-to-day design work on residential and mixed-use projects — grading, drainage, utility layout, and permit submittals. She joined the firm out of Auburn's civil engineering program in 2022 and is on track for her P.E. next year.
She's the one who catches the drainage detail nobody else spotted, and she keeps our senior engineers honest with the phrase "walk me through why."
Alabama native. Runs the Baldwin County half marathon every spring.
James CaldwellP.L.S.
James runs ALTA surveys and complex boundary work for our commercial clients. If a survey is going to a title company, it usually has his seal on it.
Fifteen years surveying property across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, and the courtroom-tested judgment that comes with defending a boundary line more than once.
Grew up on his family's farm in Andalusia. Still lives on the same road.
Darrell Simmons
Darrell handles construction engineering and inspection for our public-sector and municipal projects. If a road, storm sewer, or utility line is going in the ground on one of our jobs, chances are Darrell is there when the first shovel hits dirt.
ALDOT-certified for pavement and materials testing, with the kind of quiet authority that keeps contractors honest without ever raising his voice.
Deacon at his church. Grandfather of six.
Laura Nichols
Laura keeps the lights on. Accounts, contracts, HR, and the thousand small things that a growing firm needs someone reliable to handle — she handles them.
Before joining Civil Southeast, she managed operations for a mid-size construction firm in Mobile. She joined us in 2020 because she liked the idea of working for a company where everyone knew everyone.
Mom of three. Sunday school teacher. Answers every email within two hours.
Michael Adkins
Michael is often the first person you'll meet from Civil Southeast. He handles client relationships, proposal work, and the long conversations at the front of every project where we figure out if we're a good fit for each other.
Formerly on the developer side of the table — which means he can talk pro forma, entitlement risk, and construction schedule in the same sentence.
Alabama-born. Recovering season-ticket-holder to the Braves.
